Bequia United to give it all in Concacaf club outing

Bequia United Football Club plans to give it their all as they venture out for the first time in Group A of the Caribbean Football Union’s section of the Concacaf Club Competition.

The group commences from tomorrow at the Antigua Recreation Ground in Antigua and Barbuda and will see the Vincentian outfit meeting hosts Greenbay Hoppers.

Bequia United’s second match is on Friday versus Racing of Haiti and on Sunday, they will engage Suriname’s Inter Moengo Tapoe.

Acknowledging that the Bequia unit will be facing off against three opponents that are in a semi-professional set-up, coach Kendale Mercury said that his outlook is to give “one hundred per cent.”

“We would love to come out of the group on top, but realistically from a management standpoint, all we are asking of the players is to give 100 per cent and the result will take care of itself,” Mercury confirmed.

“If we go there and give 100 per cent of effort and we get thrashed, then we will have to come back and assess the state of the Bequia United Football Club and state of football here in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG),” Mercury underscored.

Mercury disclosed that Bequia United preparations in the last few days were mainly of a mental nature, as most of the players have been in such a setting for a regional competition.

Mercury said that the outing should also be one to gauge the standard of football in SVG versus that of the other territories in the region.

Bequia United will be represented by 20 players, along with four officials, who make up the management team. The contigent left here in two batches yesterday and today and included in the list of players are national goalkeeper – Winslow Mc Dowall, who is on loan from Hope International.

According to Mercury, Bequia United’s trip was made possible from inputs from Action Bequia, the Bequia Yacht Club, players’ contributions, fund-raisers and a travel grant from Concacaf.

System Three Sports Academy, winners of the 2016 National Club Championships, is the other Vincentian outfit in the competition.

System Three Sports Academy will host their group next month here at the Victoria Park.

Bequia United finished second to System Three Sports Academy in the premiership of the national club tournament, staged by the St Vincent and the Grenadines Football Federation.

Their placings gave them the right to enter the Concacaf championships.(RT)
