Eight teams vying for Richland Park Netball honours
Eight teams have committed to participating in this yearâs Richland Park Netball Competition, which commenced last Sunday, at the Richland Park Government School hard court.
Competing for title honours are High Park United, QUESCO Titans, J & G Scorchers, 3Jâs Valley Strikers, Youngsters, Young Strugglers, Sea Operations Nar Fren Dem, and VSport Youths.
They are hoping to be crowned the new champions, as last yearâs winners â LP Combine â relinquished their reign by not defending the title.
Up for grabs by the eight outfits is the winning purse of $1,500, with the second place set to pocket $1,000 and the third placed team â $700.
But president of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Netball Association Doris Mc Intosh called on the organizers â Valley Sports Committee to strive for a homogenous tournament, with the teams confined to the Marriaqua area.
In an unexpected delivery, Mc Intosh said forcibly: âThis tournament really should be a homegrown tournamentâ¦; keep within the bounds of your area.â
Mc Intoshâs comments drew sharp responses from some persons in attendance.
With a kiss of her teeth, one female questioned what is the national association doing to develop the sport.
Continuing, Mc Intosh indicated that the area competitions are good feeders for the national club tournament and wished the participants in the Richland Park competition all the best in their 2017 outing.
The opening ceremony was also addressed by St Clair Prince, parliamentary representative for Marriaqua; Nelson Hillocks, director of physical education and sports, and guest speaker Kirk Da Silva. Following this, a 10 â minute knockout competition took place.
Scorchers finished the last team standing, while 3Jâs Valley Strikers won the best dressed team award.(RT)
