SOSVG observes successful Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day

Special Olympics SVG ensured that it paid homage to Eunice Kennedy Shiver, the founder of the international movement, by joining with the rest of the world in observing “Eunice Kennedy Shiver Day.”

Part of the commemoration was a Fun Day, which again took place at the Calliaqua Playing Field, last Saturday. A host of sporting activities consumed the day’s commemoration.{{more}}

Among them were bocce, football, cricket, 50m and 80m races and the obstacle race, “Catch the Bus.”

Sports director of SOSVG Terrance Davis told SEARCHLIGHT that from his assessment, “the day was indeed a success…. The fact that we were able to get the activities going made it a success.”

Davis, however, singled out the participation of a group of youngsters from the Calliaqua area.

“Their presence throughout the day and being part of all our activities, for me was the highlight and to them I say a special thanks,” Davis commended.

The SOSVG also used the occasion as a fund-raiser, in the form of a barbecue, to assist in funding its regular programmes.

The late Eunice Kennedy Shiver was the sister of United States President John F Kennedy and senators Robert F Kennedy and Ted Kennedy.

Kennedy Shriver was the founder in 1962 of Camp Shriver, which started on her Maryland farm, known as Timberlawn and, in 1968 evolved into the Special Olympics.

The observance of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day began in 2010, one year after her death. St Vincent and the Grenadines joined in its observance in 2013.(RT)
