Mustique make perfect start to Masters’ Cricket entry

Newcomers to the SVG Masters 20/20 Cricket Competition Mustique have made a winning start to their first outing.

Two big wins last weekend over 2014 losing finalists – Sion Hill and defending champions – RSVG Police heralded in Mustique’s entry.

On Saturday at the Sion Hill Playing Field, Mustique outdid Sion Hill by six wickets.{{more}}

Sion Hill scored 110 for 9 off 20 overs; Lauren Baptiste – 27, William “Bill” Edwards – 25 and Colin Shoy – 22. Bowling for Mustique, Michael Charles took 5 for 10.

Chadwick Carrington then stroked 33 and Roy Baptiste, 27 not out, as Mustique made 114 for 4 off 18.4 overs.

Then, on Sunday, Mustique carried it to the end, but came away winners by one run against the lawmen at Arnos Vale One.

Mustique scored 85 for 7 off 15 overs, as the match was reduced because of rain. Lenford Hooper was the top scorer with 20, while Elgin Richards and Elmore Alexander scooped 2 for 16 and 2 for 18, respectively.

RSVG Police stopped short of their target, stifled at 84 for 9 off 15 overs. Jeffery La Borde stroked 28.

Michael Charles had 3 for 13 and Felix Greaves 2 for 6, as Mustique made it two wins in a row. On the other hand, Sion Hill suffered their second loss, going under to North Leeward also at the Sion Hill Playing Field on Sunday.

Reduced to 15 overs because of rain, North Leeward batted first and scored 90 for 8 from their allotted overs. Ancil Hooper hit 27 and William “Buddie Willie” Edwards 21, were the main scorers.

Bowling for Sion Hill, William “Bill” Edwards took 2 for 9.

When Sion Hill batted, they were stymied to reach 81 for 9 from their 15 overs. Joseph Carrington’s 24 was the lone score of note for Sion Hill, as Angus Cyrus snapped up 4 for 21, bowling for North Leeward.

The two other victors on the weekend were J G & Sons Glamorgan who defeated Kirk Da Silva’s La Croix by 9 wickets at Park Hill on Saturday and on Sunday, 2014 champions- North East stopped Bequia Association Masters by 111 runs at the Clive Tannis Playing Field in Bequia.

La Croix scored 71 for 7 off 20 overs. Basil Weekes – 24 not out, while McNeil Morgan grabbed 3 for 11.

In reply, Glamorgan rushed to 73 for 1 in 9.4 overs.

And a combined effort of Deighton Butler – 76; Peter Campbell – 68 and Winsbert Spring, propped North East to 255 for 6 off 20 overs.

Ellis Lavia got 2 for 44 and Vibert Williams had 2 for 28, bowling for Bequia.

Bequia Cricket Association Masters reached 145 for 6 from 20 overs. Vibert Williams topscored with 35 and Calvin Hazell made 32 not out.

Deighton Butler finished off a good all round effort, taking 2 for 35.(RT)
