T&T lift WICB three-day Under-19 cricket title

Trinidad and Tobago lifted the 2016 WICB three-day Under-19 competition, which ended here last Saturday.

After scoring an innings and 48-run win over dethroned champions Guyana at the Sion Hill Playing Field, T and T leaped-frog the Leewards in the points standings.{{more}}

Trinidad and Tobago finished on 37 points and the Leewards, who lost to Jamaica at the Stubbs Playing Field by 147 runs, ended on 36.8 points.

Trinidad and Tobago tallied 296, led by a captain’s knock of 91 from Kirstan Kallicharan and Joshua Da Silva with 60.

For Guyana, Marlon Hubbard took 2/26, Sylvus Tyndall – 2/33 and Looknauth Chinko – 2/69.

Guyana was sent tumbling for 85, as Jonathan Bootan bagged 7/23 and Bryan Boodram – 3/23.

Asked to follow on, Guyana fared better, making 173. Bhaskar Yadram scored 84.

Bowling for T &T, Jelarnie Seales took 3/31, Bootan – 3/37, Boodram – 2/14 and Negus Smith – 2/40.

The triumph for Trinidad and Tobago U-19s followed up other regional titles secured this year, which included the Under-17, Under-15, as well as double crown for the women in the 50 overs and 20/20 formats.

Meanwhile, at Stubbs, second placed Leewards lost to Jamaica, who denied them the title.

Jamaica made 250 for eight declared. Javelle Glenn hit 110, Michael Frew – 45 and Jordane Hill – 39.

Bowling for the Leewards, Karima Gore snared 2/10 and Kofi James 2/46.

Leeward Islands replied with 178, led by Jacob Pearles’ 37 and Cameron Pennyfeather – 32.

Their batting was undermined by Jeavor Royal’s 5/60, Michael Frew – 3/48 and Andre Bailey – 2/9.

Batting a second time, Jamaica again declared, this time at 243 for 6. Leading the way was Dominik Samuels with 62 not out; Jordane Hill stroked 52 and Michael Frew, 52.

Daniel Dorum had 2/65; bowling for the Leewards, who could only make 168.

Tyrone Williams scored 50 and Kofi James – 39, as Royale took 7/64 to finish with match figures of 12/124. Royale thus became the leading wicket taker, with 22 scalps.

At Arnos Vale, the Windwards and Barbados played to a no decision.

Windward Islands’ first innings of 198 saw Johnel Eugene making 73 and Deon Burton 51, while Nicholas Kirton picked off 3/42, Dominic Drakes – 2/21 and Jarion Hoyte – 2/24.

Barbados was dismissed for 152; Dominic Drakes – 59.

Darron Nedd with 3/19, Rasheed Fredricks – 3/40 and Othniel Lewis – 2/49, were the chief wicket takers.

In their second innings, the Windwards racked up 230 for 5 declared. Emmanuel Stewart made 93 and Alick Athanaze – 76.

Requiring 277 to win, Barbados was 265 for 9, at the close of play; Shian Brathwaite – 76, Dominic Drakes – 61 not out and Deswin Currency – 34, led the charge.

Athanaze had figures of 6/65 and Kassim Peltier – 2/38.

Barbados ended on 30.1 points, the Windwards -19.1 and Guyana – 10.1.

The teams, along with the ICC Americas, go into the 50-over format from tomorrow at three venues.

At Arnos Vale One, ICC Americas play Guyana; Jamaica take on Trinidad & Tobago at Sion Hill, while at Park Hill, Barbados meet the Leeward Islands.

Round two on Thursday pits Jamaica against Windward Islands at Arnos Vale One, the Leeward Islands and ICC Americas battle at Park Hill and Trinidad & Tobago versus Barbados at Sion Hill.(RT)
