College interns lend support to SOSVG

Two students of the Division of Technical and Vocational Education of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Community College – Gary Miller and Shemika Charles — have forged what they believe can be a long-lasting relationship with Special Olympics SVG.{{more}}

The duo spent a one-month internship at the National Sports Council, Arnos Vale and crowned off their stint with the staging of a football match at the Calliaqua Playing Field on Sunday, June 19.

Played under the lights at the venue, the event, called the Special Olympics Solidarity Football Fun Match,

featured the Special Olympics football team which participated in the World Summer Games last year in Los Angeles, California, versus a select team.

Miller told SEARCHLIGHT that the event had several objectives, inclusive of embracing Special Olympics.

“We wanted the country and the world [to] know that these persons can take part in any sporting activities that we can do, as well as to embrace the skills and talents of the Special Olympics national football team,” Miller declared.

Elaborating, Miller said, “Also, we wanted to develop our planning, marketing, communication and managerial skills … To encourage sports as a tool for youth development and to donate the funds raised to Special Olympics.”

Assessing the outcome of their first effort, both Miller and Charles deemed the event a success, despite the inclement weather.

They thanked all the stakeholders and the help of Fellisha Ragguette, another student, for their support in the venture.

Pricked by getting the opportunity to put their organizational skills into play, the two interns believe they are better equipped to undertake similar events in the future.

They are looking forward to do another such event for SOSVG.

Whilst Charles has a choice for a different career path, Miller said he is buoyed to pursue events management.(RT)
