Former T&T football captain still going strong

Former Trinidad and Tobago senior team football captain Steve Pierre, who represented the twin island republic between 1975 and 1985, is still going strong on the field.

Pierre was part of the Nest-Fete masters team, which had a six-day tour of St Vincent and the Grenadines last week, and which included visits to recreational sites, such as the Dark View Falls.{{more}}

As guest of African Tref, Nest-Fete played their lone football match last Saturday at the Sion Hill Playing Field against the host, and trumped 5-3.

Pierre told SEARCHLIGHT that he has fond memories of matches versus St Vincent and the Grenadines during the Caribbean Football Union’s finals in 1979 and 1981, in Suriname and Puerto Rico, respectively.

Captain of a select Caribbean team in 1979, Pierre, who was a defender, identified Vincentian players Tyrone “Tweety” Spence and Keith “Slick” Bonadie–Clarke, who are both deceased, as those whose skills on the football field are still etched in his memory.

He rated the St Vincent and the Grenadines teams then “as really good”.

Also a noted drummer, Pierre played the double second for Exodus Steel Orchestra of Trinidad and Tobago, resulting in him travelling to various parts of the world.

Through his association with the steel pan, Pierre has been able to establish close connection with two young Vincentian pannists Rodney Small and Rejuan Baptiste.(RT)
