Rugby club shows care for environment
The Leeward Invaders Rugby Club has pledged to care for the environment in the North Leeward area. The club, on June 4, carried out a tree planting event in Petit Bordel, along the river banks.{{more}}
This project was identified as a need, following the December 2013 floods that washed out a lot of trees that maintain the river banks.
Among the trees replanted were mango, coconut and moringa, as well as ornamental flowers.
Leeward Invadersâ undertaking was done with assistance from the Richmond Vale Academy and the Forestry Division within the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries.
The tree planting project is a spin-off of an initiative taken by the SVG Rugby Union, which has been encouraging its clubs to get involved with their local communities; hence, they ran a community project competition.
The competition is the brainchild of sponsorship director Jake Heimann, who implored clubs to take responsibility for raising their own funds by seeking sponsorship and holding fund-raising events.
Once funds were raised, each club had to carry out a project to give something back to their local community.
Leeward Invaders procured its funds through the holding of several barbecue events.(RT)
