SVG still among contenders for Windwards senior cricket title

St Vincent and the Grenadines was still with an outside chance of lifting the Windward Islands two-day senior men’s cricket title, entering their last match yesterday (Thursday) at LaSagesse in Grenada, versus Dominica.

Following two losses on first innings against St Lucia and host Grenada, St Vincent and the Grenadines was at the bottom of the standings with 8 points, while Dominica and Grenada sat on 10 points, and St Lucia was ahead on 12.

The Vincentians’ second match versus Grenada at the National Cricket Stadium ended with the hosts rallying to take honours in a high scoring match.{{more}}

St Vincent and the Grenadines posted 353 for 8 declared in 94 overs, with captain Sunil Ambris – 125 and Donwell Hector – 101. Ambris’ knock spanned 136 balls and saw him striking 13 fours and 2 sixes, while Hector’s 189 balls knock included 8 fours and 3 sixes.

Atticus Browne chipped in with 31 and Casmond Walters made 29 not out.

Shermon Lewis – 2 for 59, Craig Phillip – 2 for 60 and Denis George – 2 for 88.

In reply, Grenada successfully chased down their target, getting to 358 for 9 declared in 98 overs.

Craigg Phillip – 64 not out, Ryan John – 55, Rudolph Paul – 53, Devon Smith – 37 and Josh Thomas – 30 not out. Phillip’s late order charge saw him hitting 1 four and 7 sixes from 39 balls.

Casmond Walters and Kenneth Dember bagged three wickets each for 100 and 103 respectively.

Likewise, the other second round fixture, played at Progress Park, resulted in St Lucia and Dominica playing out a draw.

Batting first, Dominica were dismissed for 209 in 79.5 overs. Jerlani Robinson hit 39 and Liam Sebastien – 38 not out.

Larry Edward and Audy Alexander bagged three wickets each.

In reply, St Lucia got to 266 all out in 62.2 overs. Keddy Lesporis stroked 93 from 89 balls with 13 fours and 2 sixes, while Liam Sebastien grabbed 6 for 44.

Batting a second time, Dominica got to 208 for 2 off 51 overs. Tyrone Theophile stroked 5 fours and 6 sixes in his 90, while Jerlani Robinson’s 86 came from 148 balls, in which he belted 7 fours and 3 sixes.

When the competition commenced on Saturday, St Vincent and Grenadines lost on first innings to St Lucia at the National Stadium and Dominica achieved the same feat against Grenada at Progress Park.

St Lucia posted 243, with Taryck Gabriel striking 7 fours and 2 sixes in his knock of 80; Audy Alexander made 47 and Keddy Lesporis – 38.

Casmond Walters snared 5 for 30, Shaquille Browne – 2 for 32 and Kenroy Peters – 2 for 48.

In reply, St Vincent and the Grenadines were dismissed for 177. Sunil Ambris – 32, Casmond Walters – 30, and 29 each from Miles Bascombe and Asif Hooper.

Dornan Edward grabbed 3 for 37, while Larry Edward and Kevin Augustin picked up 2 for 24 and 2 for 34, respectively.

And, batting a second time, St Lucia were 165 for 8, led by Keddy Lesporis’ 54; Craigg Emmanuel – 41 and Sabinus Emmanuel – 39. Dember bagged 5 for 33.

At Progress Park, Dominica amassed 329. Theophile made 96, inclusive of 12 fours and 4 sixes, while Robinson struck 80, littered with 15 fours. Liam Sebastian stroked 6 fours in his 50 and Vincent Lewis was 29 not out.

Denis George took 5 for 84 and Rudolph Paul – 2 for 57, bowling for Grenada.

Grenada, after being 123 for 6, rallied to 312 all out. Keone George and Roland Cato shared in a partnership of 103 for the seventh wicket. George scored 63.

Cato went on to score 96 not out, containing 10 fours and 4 sixes.

Batting a second time, Dominica was 21 without loss.
