Cato to mentor young spin bowlers

Not harbouring thoughts of national selection, Dyke Cato’s next best contribution to local cricket is to mentor young spin bowlers.

The 36-year-old Cato, an off spinner, has fingered upcoming bowler Othneil Lewis, to whom he would impart the craft.{{more}}

Lewis, who last year made his debut on the Windwards Under-19 team and is again eligible this year, has been named among four reserves to the St Vincent and the Grenadines senior team to the 2016 Windward Islands tournament in Grenada.

“Give him a couple years and he will be the best spinner in St Vincent and the Grenadines,” Cato projected.

Also a right-handed off spinner, Lewis was voted as the top all-rounder in the Under-21 division of the Massy Insurances Schools’ Cricket Tournament.

His 229 runs and 13 wickets were vital in the Georgetown Secondary School lifting the title.

Lewis was also the top run scorer in the competition.

Both Lewis and Cato worked in tandem during this year’s Premier Division cricket competition, as the two helped Lime Radcliffe to craft five outright wins and the 2016 title.

Cato scalped 36 wickets from five matches, while Lewis hauled in 20 from four matches, as they finished one-two for their team.

And, barring any unforeseen circumstances, Cato will be the division’s top wicket-taker for the fourth year in a row.

Cato, who is also a trained scorer, is a statistician of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Cricket Association Inc.(RT)
