According to g-macsports.com, Michael, a Davis & Elkins College student was named the final Great Midwest Athletic Conference Womenâs Tennis Athlete of the Week for the spring on Monday, May 2.
Michael earned the conference honour for back-to-back weeks after her team made history earlier this month at the Dayton Indoor Tennis Courts in postseason games. Her prowess on the court helped Davis & Elkins earn the G-MAC womenâs tennis champion trophy for the first time in school history, earning the leagueâs first automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Championship Midwest Regional in the process. Michael was instrumental in helping D&E secure the win, taking both her singles and doubles matches.
Her team, nicknamed âThe Senatorsâ, finished the regular season with a 14-10 overall record and went on a perfect league run with a 7-0 mark.
Halima has a long list of sporting and academic achievements. In 2007, she was named Junior Sportswoman of the Year for outstanding performance in tennis and since then has continued to succeed in the tennis field.
During an interview with SEARCHLIGHT, Ceceil Michael-Samuel, Halimaâs mother, said that she has never worried about her daughter while she was completing her studies, as in her opinion, her daughterâs faith and support from parents and loved ones has kept the tennis player and university student stable.
âI donât have to worry about Halima at the college; in her first year when she went, she had just recently got baptized and every Friday night the tennis team goes liming, but Halima, most of the time, she would tell them she has homework to do and she canât goâ, said Michael-Samuel.
The happy mother said that her daughterâs class mates see Halima as a role model and a leader and as a result, âI have never worried as to the companyâ¦she keeps or where she goes,â Samuel said.
Halima has been on the Deanâs List since entering the college in 2012. She is currently doing a double major in Accounting and Economics and will next year pursue studies to become a Certified Public Accountant.
The 21-year-old Michael, one of two students invited for second interviews after a participating in Certified Public Accounting (CPA) fair in 2015, is a former student of the Girlsâ High School (GHS) and the St Vincent Community College (SVCC).
