Vincentian smashes another swim record in Barbados
Vincentian swimmer Shne Joachim destroyed Bajan competition last week, swimming herself into the Barbados record books for the second time, by breaking the 50 metre breaststroke record in a time of 35.03 seconds.{{more}}
She was able to demonstrate that she is one of the regionâs best female breaststroke swimmers and came home with a total of three gold medals.
Shne was part of the contingent from the St Vincent Black Sands Swim Squad (BSSS) that took part in the Barbados National Swimming Championships, held February 24 to 28, 2016.
Also winning medals for the BSSS were swimmers Jamie and Alex Joachim, Mya and Aaron Defreitas, Cruz Halbich and Shane Cadogan.
Shneâs younger brother Alex Joachim swam a total of 10 personal best times, which won him three gold, three silver and two bronze medals and younger sister Jamie Joachim swam to family tradition and won two bronze medals and produced a total of three personal best times over the four-day competition.
Siblings Aaron and Mya Defreitas swam themselves onto the medal podium. Mya brought home one bronze medal, accompanied by five personal best times and her brother Aaron swam himself to two silver and three bronze medals, with a total of three personal best swims, competing in the boys 13 to 14 age group. Aaron also achieved a Carifta qualifying time in the 50 metres freestyle.
Long distance king Cruz Halbich beat his personal best time by 27 seconds in the 1,500 metre freestyle, winning himself a gold medal, accompanied by a silver and two bronze medals.
One of St Vincentâs leading academics, Shane Cadogan, demonstrated that he doesnât only excel in the classroom. Shane challenged the Bajans in a total of 11 events and proudly brought home a total of three gold, five silver and two bronze medals.
The next regional swimming competition will be the CARIFTA Games, to be held in Martinique at the end of March.
