During the awards ceremony, which took place at the at the clubâs training hull upstairs the Union House (Lower Middle Street), four students â Dominic Williams, Sammy Williams, Roz-Anna Baker and Garfield Hooper â were presented with the Shield award for exceptional performance.
Two other students were also presented with special awards for their outstanding performance in this yearâs Caribbean Primary Exit Assessment and CXC/CSEC examinations.
Delivering brief remarks, president of the club Lanceford Weekes told the gathering that the students are doing well in the practice of martial arts, and that they are always eager to learn new things.
Addressing the parents, Weekes said that academic achievements and physical activity, especially in sporting disciplines, complement each other well.
âWe try to promote discipline and that is the case in taekwondo. That discipline is displayed in the weekly training these students go through. It is displayed in their attempt to get here on time. And what we see generally, that brings out is a reflection in their ability to focus for longer periods, and this is definitely a plus for their development,â Weekes said.
He further thanked the parents for sending their children to training each week and also for coming along to observe what their children are doing.
âThis encourages the children to give of their best in the training. It shows that you are interested in what they are doing, and so they are able to benefit more from what we are doing here,â he said.
The club was founded in 2012, and instituted its first executive last year.
Chief instructor of the club is master Glenroy Gaymes. (KW)
