Digicel donates EC$35,000 towards staging of Special Olympics SVG National Games

Digicel SVG Limited has given some EC$35,000 towards the 2014 staging of the Special Olympics National Games.

The money was handed over last Wednesday during a ceremony at Frenches House. Chair Special Olympics SVG Sir Errol Allen collected the funds from marketing manager at Digicel Juno DeRoche.{{more}}

DeRoche said that Digicel’s Chair Dennis O’Brien has a keen interest in Special Olympians and has been supporting the cause since around 2002, when he rounded up all the Special Olympics Committees in the Eastern Caribbean and took them to Ireland for a Special Olympics event.

DeRoche added that the company is committed to supporting the Special Olympians, as not many organizations do.

“We must never cease to support the specially gifted and we are committed to doing so and we want to let you know that we are in your corner,” said DeRoche, who added that Digicel is also committed to helping the local team get to the 2015 Summer Games in California.

Also present at the ceremony was managing director of the Bank of St Vincent and the Grenadines Derry Williams, Special Olympics North America representative Maureen Webber, Special Olympics SVG chair Sir Errol Allen, Special Olympics coach Terrence Davis, national director Special Olympics SVG Janice McMaster and other directors of the SOSVG board.

The 2014 National Games were held at the Victoria Park, begining on Friday, November 14, with an opening ceremony at 4:30 p.m. Special Olympics patron Governor General Sir Frederick Ballantyne declared the Games open. The Games continued on Saturday, November 15 from 9:30 a.m. with track and field events and bocce.
