Middle blockers pull out stops
Local volleyballers playing the role of middle blockers had their knowledge topped up with the hosting of a one-day workshop at the Girlsâ High School hard court recently.{{more}}
Facilitated by national player and current vice president of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Volleyball Association Kemaul Lee, the workshop brought players from the various teams, who play that position.
Lee was passing on his knowledge gained from attending a middle blockers course last year in St Lucia.
The middle blockerâs role is equally critical in offensive play as it is in defensive play.
The middle position is the player at the net in the middle of the court between the two outside blockers, and he/she strives to be involved in blocking the opponentâs hitters wherever they may be on the court.
In attack, the middle blocker will usually hit quick sets or serve as a decoy to confuse the opponentâs blockers if the pass is good enough.
The local transfer of expertise by Lee is in keeping with the mandate of the Alana Mc Master-led executive, which took office last November.
According to Mc Master, âThe association would be providing all the means necessary for development of skills on and off the court.â
The middle blockers practical workshop follows the commencement of the firmsâ volleyball tournament which is also in train at the Girlsâ High School hard court. Seven firms, including defending champion â the Ministry of Education, are participating.
And, in a block of activities overseen by the St Vincent and the Grenadines Volleyball Association, the Q-Care Pharmacy/Ministry of Education Secondary Schoolsâ tournament is nearing completion.
For Mc Master, things are coming together for her relatively inexperienced executive.
Mc Master, who had previous experience in national womenâs football, attended her first overseas volleyball assignment two weekends ago in Antigua and Barbuda, when she got baptized in the regional waters of volleyball administration at the Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association meeting. (RT)
