Double delight for Reborto Boyde

Reborto Boyde is the other half of a biological pair, and last Saturday he doubled up by taking Team Athletics SVG’s Junior Male Athlete of the Year award and capped it off later in the night, when he stapled the Junior Sportsman of the Year at the National Sports Awards.{{more}}

The latter and more significant, he found rewarding.

Holding his chest momentarily before heading to the podium to collect the national award, Reborto said he was not expecting it, as he believed others had done better than he.

In gaining the national award, Reborto saw off other finalists in his twin brother, Reuberth, who is also a sprint athlete, along with beach volleyball players Rodell Fraser and Delsun Welcome and cricketer Ray Jordan.

A student of the Bishop’s College Kingstown, Reborto is considered one of St Vincent and the Grenadines’ best sprint prospects. He reached the semi-finals of the 100m and 200m metres at the World Youth Championships held in Ukraine last year.

It is a feat never attained previously by any Vincentian athlete.

In the 100m heats, Reborto timed 10. 86 seconds to finish second and an automatic place in the semi-final.

In the semi-final, his time was 10.82 seconds, placing him third, and 13th fastest time of the 24 semi-finalists.

Running in the 200m, Roberto clocked a personal best of 21.78 seconds, as he advanced as one of the fastest losers.

In the semi-finals, Reberto placed seventh in 22.16 seconds, which put him 19th of the 22 competitors.

At the Trinidad and Tobago National Junior Championships, he won the 100m and was third in the 200m, while at the Windward Islands School Games, Reborto placed third in the 100m and was second in the 200m.

Reborto also won the 100m and 200m at the Inter-Secondary Schools’ Track and Field championships and the Bishop’s College Kingstown Inter House meet.

The young athlete is looking forward to 2014 as a year to excel.(RT)
