Cycling pedals off in New Year

The St Vincent and the Grenadines Cycling Union (SVGCU) has no intention to remain in the peloton of the other sports and has broken away from the pack early in the New Year.{{more}}

The SVGCU commenced 2013 with panache, staging a five-day training camp in the emerging cycling community of Barrouallie.

The five-day BMX and Mountain Bike training camp was sponsored by the National Olympic Committee and saw some 25 participants, six to 20 years participating. It took place at the Central Park, the Keartons hard court and on the Keartons main road.

Among the events covered were road course exercises, descending and ascending, sprint workout and bike handling.

The participants in the training camp will have an opportunity to showcase their skills on January 20, when the SVGCU will host the Sailor’s Cycle Centre BMX race from Barrouallie to Kearton’s and back to Peter’s Hope.

The course involves nine laps — 18 miles.

The first-prize winner will ride off with a Freestyle BMX. The other four places will also receive prizes.

One week after, on January 27, the Sailor’s Cycle Centre Mountain Bike road race will pedal off from Kingstown to Bridgetown, Biabou, then back to Sion Hill — spanning 29 miles.

At stake is a mountain bike for the first cyclist to cross the finish line, with the second, third, fourth and fifth places in line for prizes.

And, come February 3, all cyclists — children with bicycles, tricycles, youths with BMX cycles and adults with road bikes and mountain bikes — will come together in the DASCO Pharmacy Round D Town extravaganza, where once again attractive prizes are in store for the top performers in each category.
