The inaugural East Kingstown Twenty/20 Competition has filled the void left some years ago by the East Kingstown Dynamic Organisation. However, this new format sees restriction to teams from within the boundaries of the constituency.

Sponsored by Dovers Electrical, the competition got going last Saturday afternoon at the Grammar School Playing Field, with an opening ceremony.

Brief addresses came from Minister of National Mobilisation, Youth, Sports etc Frederick Stephenson; Cleve Lewis, who stood in for Parliamentary Representative for East Kingstown Arnhim Eustace; Chairperson of the East Kingstown Sports Association Cecile Cambridge; Manager of the National Sports Council Osbourne Browne and Luke Browne, who was the guest speaker.

The National Sports Council Manager used the occasion to appeal for co-operation with the use of the Grammar School Playing Field, which he said is the most used playing facility in Kingstown and possibly the entire island.

Browne also recounted the rich legacy of the facility and the number of top sportsmen which emerged from the Grammar School Playing Field, which then saw controlled use.

Browne, recognizing the proliferation of softball Cricket competitions, throughout the length and breadth of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, added his voice, calling for the establishment of a national softball association.

Cambridge told SEARCHLIGHT that with her organization given six weeks in which to complete the competition, no late registration was accepted, and the first seven teams were entertained.

Those in are Attackers, Kingstown Hill United, Bank of SVG All Stars, Kings United, Customs and Excise and East Kingstown Royal Challengers.

Cambridge revealed that although it is primarily an East Kingstown Constituency competition, her organization included the Customs and Excise team, given the close proximity of that institution, and additionally, each team can register three guest players.

Following last Saturday’s opening, an exhibition match took place.

Three matches are set for each weekend, with one on Saturdays and two on Sundays. (RT)
