Creditable performance by Vincentian Athletes
Seven budding athletes returned creditable performances at the 10th Austin Sealey Classic staged in Barbados last weekend, at the Barbados National Stadium.{{more}}
Keron Arthur got gold in the finals of the boys under-17 long jump with a distance of 1.65 metres and snatched a silver medal in the boys under-17 400m, with a time of 51.79 seconds.
In the boys shot putt under-17, versatile sportsman Shaquille Browne got bronze and also did a personal best of 12.37 metres.
Also in boys shot putt under-17, Brandon Parris got bronze with a personal best of 12.79 metres.
Parris also took gold in the 800m. In the menâ s triple jump open, Renaldo Charles got silver with a personal best of 52.10 metres, while in the long jump, Keron Arthur got silver and Renaldo Charles, a bronze medal.
In the menâ s 400 metres heats, Yurnic Nanton did a personal best of 50:15 seconds and placed fifth in the finals. Nanton also won his heat in the 800 metres but could not compete in the finals, because of travel arrangements.
Suffering a similar fate were Arthur and Charles, who made the finals of the 200 metres but had to return home before the event. Charles, though, finished fourth in the finals of the 100 metres in a time of 11.37 seconds.
Najee Isreal, who ran in the males under-17 400m, did not medal with his time of 53.90 seconds. Kimroy Cupid was also a member of the team, but he did not get to the finals of any of the events in which he contested.
The team was coached by Rawlson Morgan. The National Lotteries Authorities made a sizeable contribution towards the teamâs participation. Parents, as well as the schools the students attend, also contributed. The athletes were drawn from the St. Vincent Grammar School, the Thomas Saunders Secondary, the Petit Bordel Secondary, and the St. Martinâs Secondary.(RT)
