SVGFF honours 1979 heroes in gala ceremony
The Executive of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Football Federation will tomorrow, Saturday, February 20, pay homage to the heroes of the 1979 St. Vincent and the Grenadines Senior Football team in a gala ceremony at the Kingstown Methodist Church Hall.{{more}}
The team, many are suggesting, is arguably one of the best Football units that this country has ever produced.
In the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) competition, this country placed second to Haiti. St. Vincent and the Grenadines negotiated the preliminaries and recorded wins over French Caribbean territories, Martinique and Guadeloupe.
At the grand finale, they beat host Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago, but lost to Haiti.
Those who took the spotlight in Suriname were Elliot âMorieâ Millington, Tyrone âTweetyâ Spence, Ali Munroe, Ashley âHammersâ Baptiste, John Cato, Guy âChowâ Lowe, Raultie âPompsâ Lowe, Sydney Mandeville, Dorian Phillips, Oswald âSheenâ Millington, Raymond âBallyâ Ballantyne, Pete Morris, Stanley âLuxieâ Morris, Paul OâGarro, Tyrone âGoofolouâ Barrow, Keith âSlickâ Bonadie, Julian Small, Vin Phillips, and Tyrone âFleetyâ Grant.
Others notable who were part of the squad, but did not make the South American trip were Vibert âChilloâ Ballantyne, Raymond âBlincanceâ Soso, and Marcus Young.
The management of the team, included Sylvester âScobieâ Taylor, Basil âBungâ Cato, Rudolph âOunce ah Beefâ Vincent and Rudy Boucher.
Tomorrowâs ceremony, which is set to start at 7 pm, will also include the presentation of prizes and trophies to the various winners in the National Lotteries Authority National Club Championships. Already decided are the Premier and First Division titles. Avenues took the Premier and BESCO Pastures, the First Division.
The Under-17 final is set for today, Friday, February 19, at the Brighton Playing Field. (RT)
