SVGFF donates to Haiti

It was just over one year ago that the local football federation hosted the finals of the U-20 qualifying competition.{{more}}

Haiti was among the teams featured in the four nation tournament, and Yves Jean Bart, president of the Haiti Football Federation, was part of the contingent which journeyed to St Vincent.

Today, Bart is the only survivor after the federations’ headquarters collapsed during the earthquake which rocked that Caribbean nation a few weeks ago.

Among the dead are players, referees, coaches, medical and other administration officials.

And so, a decision was made by the local football federation to pay some homage to their fallen football brethren.

“We decided that whatever little we can do, we will do,” Earl Bennett, General Secretary of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Football Federation, said (SVGFF).

Dubbed ‘Soccer for Haiti’, the federation staged a benefit game featuring newly crowned premier division champs Avenues United against a select eleven to raise funds.

“We charged a $3 admission fee and implored persons to put as much as they could,” Bennett said.

A cheque for $2500 was on Tuesday, February 2, turned over to the local Red Cross to be used in the relief effort. (DD)
