SVG Cycling Union calendar rides off

The packed 2010 calendar of the SVG Cycling Union rode off last Sunday afternoon with the KP Howard’s Marine Cycling Classic for road bikes, mountain bikes and BMX riders.{{more}}

The flat, but challenging course, staged in relatively cool conditions, took the cyclists from Villa Flat to the Arnos Vale Round About, then to the Ratho Mill by pass road, which constituted one lap.

The road bike entrants were required to do seven laps, while the other categories of riders made three laps.

All eyes, though, were on the road bikers, as this group included the more accomplished cyclists.

After the completion of the seven laps, newly graduated senior cyclist Shimano Bailey gave warning to his competitors as he nipped them by about three bike lengths.

Bailey completed the course in one hour 44 minutes 38.08 seconds.

In the number two spot was Albert Quammie. His time was one hour 44 minutes 38.65 seconds.

Shane Cole came in third in one hour 44 minutes 41.49 seconds.

The other competitors to complete the race in that category were the ageless Peter Durrant and the new kid on the block Kenute George.

Durrant was just under a minute slower than Bailey, while George finished ten minutes later.

Collin Alexander finished ahead of versatile sportsman Steve Ollivierre in the mountain bikes segment. Collin Alexander did so in 48 minutes 21.50 seconds. Ollivierre recorded a time of 50 minutes 14.19.

Taking the BMX segment was Jomo John in 68 minutes 0.01 seconds.

The next event is set for Sunday, January 31, with the staging of the Beachfront/ Sailor’s Cycle Center Mountain Bike Classic, which takes place from 3pm at Chateaubelair. (RT)
