Bentick takes the Juniors Single title
It was game, set and match last week Friday afternoon, at the National Lotteries Tennis Centre, for the Coreas/Hazells Inc, St. Vincent Grammar School Tennis Competition.
And, the occasion was set aside for the cream of the crop to surface.{{more}}
The afternoon saw the finals of the Juniors and Seniors Singles contested.
Contesting the Juniors finals were Johnathan Perry and Rafai Bentick, in the broiling early afternoon sun.
Bentick ran away in straight sets over Perry. After Bentick took the first set 6-2, Perry offered some stern resistance in the second, but still went under 5-7.
The crowning of the competition was left to the experienced pair of Shane Huggins and Fabrice George to battle it out for the Senior Singles title.
Even with the Form One students of the school who were present throwing their support behind George, it mattered little to a focussed Huggins.
George, on the other hand, made several unforced errors, and he paid the price losing 1-6 in the first set.
Huggins completed the rout in the second set to win 6-2, to claim a second consecutive lien on the title.
He will, however, not be able to do the hat-trick, as he is in his final year at that institution.
The previous day was a better outing for George, who doubled up with Nicotello Providence to win 8-6 in the Senior Doubles Final.
The pair defeated Gerand Phills and Dujol Ollivierre. Also that day, the duo of Javed James and Xeno Daize triumphed over Anton Lewis and Johnathan Perry in the Junior Doubles Final.
Forty-six players participated in the competition, which was played for the second year.
It was the first time that the competition received corporate sponsorship.(RT)
