Top three seeds in World Junior Tennis competition

A Three-man Under 14 team captained by SVGTA Vice President and Level II Coach, Tony Boyea, left the state on Saturday to represent St. Vincent & the Grenadines in the North/Central America & Caribbean Pre-qualifying Zone of the International Tennis Federation’s World Junior Tennis Competition.

The tournament began today in Guatemala and will end on Saturday. The team’s travel was made possible through sponsorship by the National Lotteries Authority and the International Tennis Federation. The SVGTA was adjudged Association of the Year by the National Sports Council at its annual awards ceremony last month.{{more}}

Representing SVG are: Number one seed Fabrice George, Number two seed Daryl MacLeish, and Number three seed Kevin Huggins.

The three shall see action against 12 countries, which include Cuba, El Salvador, Trinidad & Tobago, Nicaragua, Panama, Honduras, host country Guatemala, and defending champions Puerto Rico.

One boy’s team from this event will join Canada, Mexico and USA in the Final Qualifying event for North/Central America & Caribbean, to be held 4-6 May in Montreal, Canada.

The World Junior Tennis Competition, the International Team Competition for Players aged 14 & Under, was started by the ITF in 1991. The Final was held in Japan every year until 1998, before moving to Prostejov, Czech Republic the following year. Cesky Telecom has sponsored the Final since 1999.

Over the past ten years, the USA and Great Britain have won the boys’ event twice, while Russia are four-time winners of the girls’ final.
