How to accomplish your important goals

Do you appear to be busy all day long but seem to accomplish very little. This is often because you are busy working on trivial tasks while you are procrastinating on the one or two activities that could make a real difference to your company.

Today we discuss the Pareto Principle and how to apply it to goal-setting and productivity. The “Pareto Principle” or the 80/20 rule was named after its founder, the Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto, back in 1895. He noticed that people in society seemed to divide naturally into what he called the “vital few,” or the top 20 percent in terms of money and influence, and the “trivial many,” or the bottom 80 percent. Later, he discovered that virtually all economic activity was subject to this principle.

According to this principle, 20 percent of your activity will result for 80 percent of your results. That means, if you have a list of ten items to accomplish, two of those items will turn out to worth more than the other eight items put together. However, most people procrastinate on the top 20 percent of items, the “vital few” and instead, busy themselves with the bottom 80 percent the “trivial many.”

To apply the 80/20 rule to goal-setting and overall productivity, first, make a list of ten goals. Ask yourself if you could only accomplish one of the goals on the list within 24 hours, which one will have generated the greatest positive impact on your life or work.

Next, pick your second most important goal. By completing this exercise, you would have determined your most important 20 percent of your goals that will help you more than anything else you do.
Before you begin work, always ask yourself, “Is this task in the top 20 percent of my activities or in the bottom 80 percent?” The 80/20 can be applied to almost every area of your life. Use it right and it can change your life.
