Rubis helps make US basketball scholarships possible for eight local athletes
EIGHTYOUNG Vincentian athletes are now on their way to pursuing basketball scholarships in the United States, thanks to a collaboration between Rubis West Indies Ltd, the Mavrix Basketball Team, and Anthony Roy Collegiate Placement Services (USA).
The transformative opportunity came through the International Basketball Summer Camp, which was held from July 21 -25, 2025, at the Calliaqua Playing Field. A Rubis release notes that a total of 32 athletes participated in the camp, which was facilitated by coach, Cameron Turner of the Eastern Arizona Men’s Basketball Team.
At the close of the programme, Turner selected eight standout athletes to receive basketball scholarships in the US marking a major milestone for youth sports development in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG).
Head coach of the Mavrix Basketball Team, Richard Cato, expressed deep appreciation for the support that made this opportunity possible.
“As a result of this programme, I am pleased to inform you that Coach Cameron Turner of Eastern Arizona Men’s Basketball College Team (USA) has selected eight players for basketball scholarships in the United States,” Cato said.
“The necessary logistics are already being put in place for their placement.”
Cato also thanked Rubis West Indies Ltd for helping facilitate the visit of international coaches to SVG- support that was instrumental in creating these scholarship pathways.
Rubis Country Representative, Elroy Edwards, highlighted the company’s pride in being part of such an impactful initiative.
“Representing Rubis at the event, I was proud to see our support contributing to such life-changing opportunities for several
youths. As a result of our donation, eight young people have been given the chance to advance their athletic skills and, more importantly, further their academic development,” Edwards is quoted in the release as stating.
“I wish to say also, as a company empowering drivers and businesses to go far and achieve more through the quality products we offer, we take great pride in extending that same support to the next generation- helping young people realize that the sky is not the limit, but only the beginning….”
He added, “This initiative underscores Rubis’ ongoing commitment to youth empowerment and community development in St Vincent and the Grenadines and beyond”.
