Vincentian awarded Captain’s Prize in Navy

A Vincentian has been awarded the Captain’s Prize for being the best recruit in the Royal Navy.

Etme Maloney received the highly coveted award on February 21, 2020 on completion of his initial training on board the HMS Raleigh.

The award is presented to the recruit who has put in exceptional performance throughout Phase One of the training.

Maloney, a marine engineering technician is originally from Richland Park. The son of Velma Maloney and Nav Fredericks, he is a past student of the St Joseph’s Convent Marriaqua and the Division of Technical Education of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Community College.

Maloney received high praises from his trainers and high ranking members of the Royal Navy who affirmed that he performed above and beyond the requirements for the Phase One training. They also wished him continued success on his naval journey.

The inspecting officer is reported as having said that Maloney’s batch of recruits is the most impressive that he had seen since acting in this capacity.

The top recruit who was also the deputy leader of the Port Class of Cornwall Division 19/27 was also awarded the Physical Training Superior Award.

Prior to joining the Royal Navy, Maloney was a member of the SVG Coast Guard. He credits his success to the training and discipline of the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force as well as his affiliation with Islandwide Fitness. He is thankful to his family and especially his mother Velma Aggie Maloney.
