The Soufriére access road

EDITOR: The road to La Soufriere is the primary access point to what many (tourists and locals alike) consider to be the islands pre-eminent tourist attraction bringing in thousands of visitors, be they hikers or citizen geologists each year. It is maddening then that once you leave the main road, your first impression of the volcano trail is a poorly kept, pothole ridden road all but the toughest of vehicles are able to traverse. Many taxi drivers refuse to take tourists to the trail head, due to the potential for their vehicles to be damaged trying to navigate the road. It is telling that the CELAC summit is to begin this weekend, with foreign politicians visiting St. Vincent, but it took up to now to fix the potholes and cut back the trees that have been an issue on the roads for some time. Perhaps then, if the government were to host the next meeting for heads of state at the base of the volcano, the road may be fixed.
