Drivers need to exercise better care on the roads

EDITOR: The cell phones and over speeding as they relate to driving is fast becoming a norm for many drivers.

Far too often we see drivers talking on their cell phones for good period of time while driving. This is often done with the driver holding the cell phone in one hand and to his ears, while he uses the other hand to steer. We know that this practice can be dangerous. In many cases when this occurs the driver many times is not alert as he should be and also he can lose focus.

There have been numerous occasions where persons almost got knock down on pedestrian crossings because drivers are on the cell phone talking and driving. Similarly, on many occasions drivers while on the cell phones have gotten into accidents, some fatal and some not fatal. This is so because the driver is not focusing since he is holding the cell phone and concentrating on the conversation and so sometimes he ends up in an accident.

I, therefore recommend that the law be enforced since it is illegal to be talking on the phone, holding the phone and driving. I know many persons are accustomed to do it and some are very good at doing it.

However, for safety on the road, the law should be enforced. Drivers must equip themselves with the use of a blue tooth, headset and other devices that are hand free, so that the drivers hands are free to hold the steering wheel and also to focus on the road and be alert, since he would not be holding the device but simply talking while focusing on the road.

The over speeding by many vehicles is also of concern. I recommend the installation of speed meters throughout the island. This will assist in monitoring and capturing those who exceed the speed limit. I know it is costly to do so, but we are living in a modernized and technological age and so we must seek to upgrade. Doing this will help to minimize the over speeding since drivers will be ticked when they are caught over speeding.

I know you will agree with me that safety on the road is of great concern to us and we would all like to see things in place to cut down on some of these loose and illegal practices by many of us as drivers on the roads.

Let us all seek to have safety on the roads and let us all strive to work together for safety on the road. For the next life lost can be someone close to you or even your own life. Remember, the proverb says, “ A stitch in time saves nine”. Safe driving on the road.
