The Windward Islands Schools’ Games are here
From this Saturday, July 26 to August 2, 2025, St Vincent and the Grenadines will be a hive of activity as the multi- discipline Caribbean Bank Note-sponsored Windward Islands Schools’ Games comes to these shores.
As such, a combined total of 200 athletes and officials from Dominica, Grenada and Saint Lucia will descend on the country to pit their sporting skills against their Vincentian counterparts.
Having been forced to cancel the 2024 edition because of the passage of Hurricane Beryl, for the next week or so, St Vincent and the Grenadines will be on show.
Starting off this Saturday, July 26, the Track and Field segment takes place at the Diamond Track Facility, beginning at 11:00 a.m, with the formal opening ceremony.
The formalities will be followed by field action,as athletes from the four islands- Dominica, Grenada, Saint Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines give an expose’ of determination and national purpose.
Then on Sunday, male volleyball at the GHS Hardcourt, female basketball at the Calliaqua Hardcourt and football at the Brighton Playing Field, are scheduled.
Monday, July 28, features female volleyball, male basketball, and netball at the Kingstown Netball Centre.
Action moves to Chilli in Georgetown on Tuesday, July 29. Dubbed “Chilli Tuesday”, the Chilli Hardcourt hosts female basketball, before the footballers do their do at the Chilli Playing Field.
Thereafter, the netballers crown it off as focus switches back on to the hardcourt.
Things get steamy on Wednesday and male basketball returns to the Calliaqua arena, female and male volleyball at the GHS court.
Thursday, July 31, the penultimate day of competition has scheduled male basketball at Calliaqua, netball at the Kingstown Netball Centre and football at the Brighton Playing Field.
Friday, August, 1, is a rest day, where the contingents will be taken to River 14, South Rivers for a day of frolicking.
Saturday, August, 2, the curtains will be drawn on the 2025 edition, with the staging of female basketball at Calliaqua and male and female volleyball at the GHS Hardcourt.
Capping off everything will be the closing ceremony.
Beyond the actual fixtures, our hospitality, ability to execute a relatively taxing event- controlling all of the moving parts at one time, whilst ensuring that the St Vincent and the Grenadines contingent represents well- will come under the microscope and scrutinized with the minutest of details.
Hopefully, all the obvious kinks that may have emerged throughout the planning process will be ironed out in time for the start of the ten days, starting from arrival to departure of the three visiting teams.
Similarly, on the ground, getting St Vincent and the Grenadines ready and raring to face the opponents and better their last place achieved in 2024, is part of the objectives of the host country.
One, though, must be mindful that there is no perfection when it comes to hosting and pulling off events of such magnitude.
Therefore, all stakeholders must play their part in ensuring that the 2025 Windward Islands Schools’ Games are the BEST in the long history and tradition of the multi- sport extravaganza.
Vincentians from all walks of life who, in some way, can assist in selling their country and projecting our pride and passion, should do so with the utmost gusto for the duration of the Games, and beyond.
Again, St Vincent and the Grenadines is in the spotlight, let us make it happen for all Vincentians.
