Akley Olton Dominates Georgetown Film Festival 2025

THE GEORGETOWN Film Festival (GFF) 2025 spotlighted the remarkable achievements of Vincentian film maker, Akley Olton, whose films ‘Parliament Girls’ and ‘Madulu The Seaman bookended the festival with critical acclaim and audience admiration. Olton’s work, rooted in Caribbean culture and sharp social commentary, underscores the region’s rising influence in world cinema.

Opening the festival, Olton’s 20-minute thriller Parliament Girls, co-written with JP Schwmon, tackled the urgent issue of violence against women in Guyana. The screening was followed by a community dialogue led by activist Sherlina Nageer, exemplifying Olton’s ability to use film as a catalyst for social change and cementing his role as a transformative voice in Caribbean storytelling.

Closing the festival, Olton’s award-winning documentary Madulu, The Seaman captivated audiences and swept both the Audience Award and the Programmers’ Award (Documentary). Set in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, the film follows young Omari as he engages with the traditions of the Barrouallie whalers, offering a profound exploration of heritage and identity.
