Man chops his 85 year old father over rum

A 45 year old man was given a suspended sentence for chopping his 85 year old father, after getting angry that his father refused to kick his girlfriend out of the house when she kicked his bottle of rum over the porch.

Lennox Isaacs appeared at the Kingstown Magistrate’s Court before Senior Magistrate, Tammika McKenzie, on May, 19, 2025, where he pleaded guilty that on May 18, 2025, at Sharpes Village, Chateaubelair he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Alban Granderson of the same address.

The facts are that Granderson is Isaacs’ father. They both live in the same house. They had engaged in violent altercations prior to this incident, where Isaacs had stabbed his father in his chest. Their altercations are usually due to Isaacs’ alcohol addiction.

On the day in question, at about 1:20 p.m, Granderson was at home with Isaacs’ girlfriend and their 15-month -old son, when Isaacs went home appearing to be under the influence of alcohol. He had a quart bottle containing strong rum which he placed on the floor of the porch.

Isaacs’ girlfriend kicked away the bottle, which resulted in Isaacs cursing her. Isaacs then took up a cutlass from inside the house and struck it on the porch wall three times.

He then told his girlfriend to leave the house, but Granderson told Isaacs that he cannot remove his girlfriend from the house because of their baby. Isaacs then began cursing his father, and pointed the cutlass at him.

Granderson then took up a cutlass from the kitchen. When he returned to the porch, he saw Isaacs holding the baby with his left hand and holding the cutlass with his right hand.

Isaacs ‘fired’ a chop at his father, who put up his right hand that was holding the cutlass in order to defend himself. However, Granderson was struck with the cutlass causing him to sustain injuries.

The matter was reported to the police. A statement was recorded from Granderson. Investigations were carried out into the matter.
