Former US Marine Corps Sergeant fined $3,000 for illegal gun possession

A Green Hill man who attained numerous accolades while he served in the US Marine Corps was fined $3,000 for illegal gun possession.

Carey Defreitas, 28, appeared at the Serious Offences Court before Chief Magistrate, Colin John yesterday, May 15, 2025, where he pleaded guilty that on March 12, 2025 at Arnos Vale he had in his possession one Glock 19 pistol without holding the requisite license issued under the Firearms Act.

He was also charged with unlawfully discharging a firearm within one hundred yards of a public place, specifically, near Trotman’s Depot in Arnos Vale.

However, that charge was withdrawn. The facts are that on the date in question, at about 9:00 p.m Commander Henry, who is stationed at the SVG Coast Guard Base was in the area of Trotman’s Depot in Arnos Vale at Mac & C bar with some non-Vincentian police officers when one of the officers asked him, if “that normal.”

Commander Henry asked him what he was referring to. When Henry looked, he saw a man take a firearm from another man’s waist.

Shortly after, a loud explosion that sounded like a gunshot was heard. Commander Henry went in the direction of the sound.

He identified himself to Defreitas as the police officer in charge of the SVG Coast Guard and asked him if he’s a holder of a firearm license.

Defreitas said no. One, Josh Cyrus appeared where Commander Henry was. The Commander asked Defreitas to hand over the firearm.

Cyrus then informed the commander that the firearm belonged to him. Commander Henry then secured the weapon. Both Defreitas and Cyrus left the scene and went away.

The matter was later reported to the Calliaqua police. Corporal 386 Jack went to the scene and met Commander Henry. They had a conversation.
