Attack of police officer leads to bus conductor forking out $$

AN OMNIBUS conductor was bonded and ordered to pay compensation to a police officer after pleading guilty to choking him around his neck.

Rodney Sam appeared at the Kingstown Magistrate’s Court before Senior Magistrate, Tammika McKenzie on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, where he pleaded guilty that on May 17, 2024 he assaulted Kenroy Grant of South Rivers causing actual bodily harm.

Sam had initially denied the offence, but changed his plea to guilty after his surety surrendered bail.

Grant is a police officer attached to the Traffic Department of the Royal St Vincent & the Grenadines Police Force.

At about 7:20 p.m, on May 17, Grant was dispatched on Traffic Duty at South River Road with a party of police officers from the Traffic Department where he observed an omnibus H-1195 stop and obstruct the flow of traffic.

On close observation, Grant also saw Sam attempting to load the omnibus in a restricted area. As a result, he informed Sam that he was not allowed to park there.

Sam went on board and the chauffeur drove the omnibus further ahead and stopped, then attempted to load more passengers onto the bus in an area also not designated as a Bus Stop.

Grant was not satisfied and approached the omnibus. He informed the chauffeur and Sam of the traffic offences of obstruction of the Free flow of traffic.

The chauffeur began cursing the officer using obscene language who told him he would be arrested.

The chauffeur exited the omnibus and he stood fixedly. Grant asked Sam to accompany him to the police station. However, he did not move.

The chauffeur and Sam entered the omnibus and Sam pointed his hands in Grant’s face.
