Alleged baby killer appears for arraignment

A 22 year old man who allegedly kidnapped and murdered a one year old baby in Rose Hall has been remanded into custody.

Jeremiah Samuel, of Rose Hall, appeared at the Kingstown Magistrate’s Court before Senior Magistrate, Colin John on Monday February, 26, 2024 where he was charged that on February 10, 2024 at Rose Hall stole and carried away without the consent of her mother Janae Samuel-Wright of Rose Hall.

Samuel was also charged that he on Monday February, 10, 2024 at Rose Hall, with malice aforethought caused the death of Janae Samuel-Wright of Rose Hall by an unlawful act.

The charges are indictable, therefore Samuel was not required to plea. He was remanded into custody and will appear at the Serious Offences Court on June 25, 2024, for the start of his Preliminary Inquiry.

Samuel had no legal representation at his arraignment.

It is alleged that Samuel removed the baby from her mother’s home, concealed her in a neighbouring yard, and slashed her throat. A resident claimed that Samuel said he was making “a sacrifice”, as he believed that child was demonic.

The incident created quite a stir in the North Leeward community where aggravated residents were demanding the release of the alleged murderer from police custody. The police had to fire warning shots in an attempt to calm the situation.
