Trial begins in death of Belmont man

A farmer is standing trial at the High Court for being accused of committing manslaughter against a Belmont resident in 2021.

Fitzgerald Phillips, also of Belmont appeared High Court#2 in Kingstown before Justice Rickie Burnett where he pleaded not guilty that on January 20, 2021 he caused the death of Jason Martin by an unlawful act.

Crown Counsel, Renee Simmons is leading the case for the Crown, while Lawyer Jomo Thomas represents the accused.

The trial which began on February 6, 2024, will hear from 16 witnesses.

A nine-member mixed jury is adjudicating this matter.

Martin, who was 47 years old at the time of his death was said to have died after receiving a chop wound on his left leg.
