Elderly man with US citizenship facing illegal gun and ammo charges

A 65 year old citizen of the United States has been granted bail after he pleaded not guilty to being in possession of one gun, and 19 rounds of ammunition without a license.

Khanroy Chewitt of Park Hill/USA appeared at the Kingstown Magistrate’s Court on Monday, January, 8, before Senior Magistrate Colin John, where he pleaded not guilty that on January 6, 2024, at Park Hill, he had in his possession one .25 pistol serial number unknown without a license issued under the Firearm Act.

He also denied that on the same date and place, he had in his possession 19 rounds of .25 ammunition without a license issued under the Firearm Act.

Prosecutors, Corlene Samuel and Delano Charles did not object to bail.

However, they informed the court that Chewitt has US citizenship and requested that he surrenders those documents.

Magistrate John granted their request. John also granted Chewitt bail in the sum of $5,000 with one surety. He is to report to the Colonaire Police Station every Monday and Friday between 8:00 a.m and 8:00 p.m. All other travel documents are to be surrendered as well.

The matter is adjourned to February 12, 2024 at the Serious Offences Court.

Lawyer, Grant Connell is representing the accused.
