Cooman found dead in Kingstown

Rohan “Cooman” Adams, one of the more popular characters in Kingstown, was found dead, early on Saturday, December 23.

The homeless man, known for referring to women as his “yellow golden apple” and for many other witty, humorous remarks, was found slumped over on a bench at Heritage Square in Kingstown. Police say no foul play is suspected, but an investigation will still be carried out.

Adams was hospitalized a few weeks ago but had since been discharged.

In December 2022, Adams, a former national youth tennis player who, early in his life, turned to cocaine, told SEARCHLIGHT that if he could miraculously re-live his life, he would not pursue tennis and he would definitely not use cocaine.

On Wednesday, Omoro “Omo Hefner” Harrington, a close friend of Adams told SEARCHLIGHT he has known Adams since 2003, but they got close when the homeless man began occupying the area around the OT Car Park where he (Harrington) worked.

Harrington said he took Adams under his wing around 2008 and the duo would on many occasions make comedic recordings for social media.

“Dr Coo was just full of joy that’s why I love being around him and he was a teacher…so many things we learned from him,” Harrington said.

Adams was originally from Cemetery Hill., Kingstown. He was born on November 4, 1974, and started playing tennis around the age of six or seven.

He was once a force to be reckoned with on the local tennis circuit but was somewhat slowed by a hernia, hence the name “Cooman” (the colloquial term for a hernia).

After several operations, he excelled at the sport, going to places like St Lucia and Martinique with the support of persons like the late Governor General Sir Frederick Ballantyne and Scott Hadley among others.

In a 2006 article in SEARCHLIGHT, Adams was described as an

undeniable talent with victories over Alex Layne, O’Nike Spann, Enrique Riveroll, Grant Connell

and other top juniors of

the 1980s, ensuring him a place in local lawn tennis history.

Back in December 2022, Adams said he would never encourage persons to use crack cocaine.

“My advice to young people…use your wisdom, wisdom is power…I would never advise a youngster to smoke cocaine and I am 48.”
