‘Chiefman’ appeals 17-year jail sentence

The 17-year prison sentence handed down to Devorn “Chiefman” Charles for possessing a gun with intent to murder, has been appealed by his lawyer Duane Daniel.

Charles, 38 had been charged that on August 2, 2020, at Block 2000, Old Montrose, with malice aforethought, he caused the death of Kimron “Warlord” Hannaway by shooting him in the head and about his body.

He was also charged that on the same day and place, he was in possession of an unlicensed firearm with intent to commit the offence of murder.

In October 2023, a jury found Charles not guilty of murder, but guilty of possession of a gun with intent to murder.

On October 19, Daniel told Justice Brian Cottle that he found the verdicts “awfully perplexing,” especially when assessing the mitigating factors of the offence for sentencing.

Daniel told SEARCHLIGHT yesterday that he has appealed the sentence as it is strange that Charles was found not guilty of murder but guilty of possession of a firearm with intent to murder.

A firearm was never recovered.

Charles has now beat four murder charges.
