Greiggs man jailed for stabbing of ex-girlfriend

A Greiggs man who stabbed his ex-girlfriend in her back with an unidentified weapon has been sentenced to prison.

Duddly Rodney, a 31-year-old farmer was charged that on August 29, 2022 at Grenville Street, Kingstown that he did unlawfully and maliciously wound Alecia Miller of Campden Park.

When Rodney appeared at the Kingstown Magistrate Court before Magistrate John Ballah on Monday, September 18 he pleaded guilty to the offence.

According to the facts that were read in court, Miller knows Rodney very well, as the two were in an intimate relationship.

However, Miller ended the relationship in July, 2022 for personal reasons. After the relationship ended, the defendant made many attempts to contact Miller but she ignored him.

On Monday, August 29, 2022 at about 9:00 pm, Miller along with some friends were liming at Pirates Pub located at Grenville Street, Kingstown.

While at the bar, she heard Rodney’s voice and turned around to see it was indeed the defendant standing calling to her “Al come here”. He sounded aggressive therefore she turned around and ignored him.

She then felt three stabs to her upper back causing her to fall to the ground. While on the ground she saw Rodney, however she was in a lot of pain and went into shock, and therefore was unable to see the object that Rodney used to stab her.

Rodney then ran out the bar, returned immediately and stabbed Miller on her right thigh. She became unconscious and he ran away.

Miller regained consciousness at the hospital and the police were contacted. Miller reported the matter to the Police and PC 1024 Wilkes took her report.

On Friday, October 14, 2022 about 5:30 pm PC Wilkes along with a party of CID personnel were on duty at Higginson Street, Kingstown. PC Wilkes met Rodney, and informed him of the report made against him.

About 6:42 pm on the same date, Rodney was cautioned and interviewed in the presence of another police officer where he gave a statement admitting to the offence. Rodney was then charged for the offence of wounding.

The Magistrate referred to the sentencing guidelines and found that based on the consequence of the offence, it falls into Category 2 and based on the seriousness of the offence, it falls into Level A.

Therefore, the magistrate began with a custodial sentence of four years. When the aggravating and mitigating factors of the offence were considered, none were found.

Aggravating of the offender was that he has had 11 previous convictions, one of which was for an assault which was committed in 2015 and the other was for wounding which was committed in 2010. However, since those offences were not recent, the court did not consider them, and so the court neither added or took away from the four-year sentence.

The court then considered Rodney’s guilty plea and reduced Rodney’s sentence by one-third, resulting in a final custodial sentence of two years and nine months.
