Farmers and fishers to get more financial assistance from Government

FARMERS AND FISHER FOLK in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) will receive more assistance from the government in the aftermath of the eruption of La Soufriere volcano.

Prime Minister, Dr Ralph Gonsalves said Finance Minister, Camillo Gonsalves Gonsalves recently negotiated a loan with the World Bank for EC$27 million, (US $10 million) which is “specifically for quick disbursement for farmers and fisher folks.”

Gonsalves, who was speaking at World Food Day celebrations at Park Hill last Friday said that plans are being made for the funds to be disbursed by direct payment.

Later this month, farmers will also benefit from a shipment of urea, which is being imported from Venezuela.

Gonsalves said the 40,000 sacks of urea will be distributed free of charge to farmers in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

Additionally, government is making plans to assist ‘serious farmers’ in paying labourers to apply the urea.
