Financial support will continue for Red and Orange zone farmers

Farmers in the Red and Orange Zones, who have been receiving financial support from the government since the volcanic eruptions last year, will receive more money at the end of this month.

After the eruptions last year, farmers in the two zones received assistance of $500 until December 2021.

The government had promised them further assistance in 2022 and many farmers had been anxiously awaiting their support payment.

Deputy Prime Minister, Montgomery Daniel spoke about the planned payment on NBC Radio on Wednesday, April 20.

He said that Cabinet had already approved the sum of 2.4 million to provide financial support to farmers in the red and orange zones who were adversely affected by the eruptions of La Soufriere Volcano.

He further disclosed that farmers will receive additional support through government bearing the brunt of the rising cost of fertilisers.

The former Minister of Agriculture, said government is concerned about the rising cost of fertilizer on the international market.

“We want to make sure that farmers can purchase fertiliser, so that we can continue to produce food here in St Vincent and the Grenadines,” Minister Daniel stressed.
