Work on Sandals Beaches Resort to begin next month

Work on the ground is to begin shortly, as St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) prepares to be the latest destination for the much acclaimed Beaches Resort which is part of the Sandals Resorts International group.

Already, many Vincentians are being trained to work at the resort which will be nestled at Buccament Bay.

Speaking on radio on Wednesday March 2, Prime Minister, Dr Ralph Gonsalves said he had been briefed by Sandals officials two days earlier.

He said the investor had originally planned to spend US$100 million on the project but feels this figure might be doubled.

Gonsalves said the original plan was to do phases one and two of the development separately; however, both phases are now being combined.

“They are going to have innovations, they are going to have some real unique features,” Gonsalves promised.

He said the actual ground work should begin by next month, with the construction phase providing employment for between 800 and 900 Vincentians.

Already, more than 200 people have left SVG to be trained at Sandals resorts across the region. The target is that 500 Vincentians will be trained overall.

When the resort is up and running, around 1300 persons could be permanently employed.
