Seventh time lucky for pool shark – Gumbs

After trying to gain a grand finale spot six times, the seventh venue proved to be the lucky one for pool shark Jahnyiah Gumbs in the 2019 “Rack it up” Guinness pool competition.

Gumbs is the winner of the Friday March 15 leg of the competition which took place at the Cool Corner Bar in Cane End.

The night’s action boiled down to Gumbs and McKies Hill resident Ozzie St Hillaire, but it was the Hopewell man who came out on top to take home the EC$600 prize money and the seventh grand finale spot.

“I always knew it was going to happen, it was just a matter of time,” Gumbs said after beating St. Hillaire. He added that he does not think he should have been struggling to qualify for the finals as he did.

The eighth and final preliminary round takes place at Azard’s Bar in Troumaca on Saturday March 23.

The organizers are asking persons to register by purchasing three Guinness beverages for $12. Each registered person will play in a best of three game and the winner moves on to the next round until there is only one person left.

Players are asked to be at the venue at 6 pm on competition night to register, and registration closes at 7 pm. Preliminary round winners are rewarded with $600 while the winner in the grand finale will get $6000.

The grand finale takes place on Saturday, April 6 at the Spotlight Stadium in Georgetown where persons will compete for $6000.

Into the grand finale so far are Roy Bullock of La Croix (West Side Bar in Cemetery Hill), Glenrick Edwards of Georgetown (Nan-I’s Shop in Pembroke), Tex Franklyn (Captain Lano’s in Villa) and Edgar “Benji” Bobb (Drop Off Nightclub in San Souci), Alston “Bun-up” Barker (Police Canteen in Kingstown) and Jerome Cupid (Skyline Bar i
