SVG Red Cross to host Regional Smposium

The St Vincent and the Grenadines Red Cross will host a regional symposium on the theme “Building Community Resilience to mitigate the impacts of Climate Change on the Caribbean” on July 13 at the conference room of the National Insurance Services (NIS) beginning at 8 am.

The symposium forms part of the 70th anniversary of the organisation and aims to strengthen sub-regional interconnectivity and awareness leading to the development of sub-regional response strategy; sensitise the leadership of the Red Cross Movement in the Caribbean of the threats associated with the impacts of Climate Change in our communities and to examine how national societies could partner could partner with government and non-state actors in the mounting of the most efficacious response to natural hazards (weather associated).

Presentations will be made by Dr Reynold Murray, Dr David Farrell of the Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology (CIMH), Inigo Barrena- Head of the Disaster and Crisis Unit.

Participants will be drawn from Government ministries, NGO’s and private sector organisations, and Medical Universities.

The Symposium will also be attended by regional and international Presidents and Directors General of the National Societies and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

The St Vincent and the Grenadines Red Cross Society has partnered with both national and International organisations in the area of Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate change adaptation and mitigation over the years.

Other activities to mark the anniversary include a field trip to Sandy Bay at 10 am and a dinner and awards ceremony at the official residence of the Prime Minister beginning at 7:30 pm.
