Breast cancer survivor raises funds to assist SVG Medical Association

Breast Cancer Survivor Karla Antoinette Baptiste handed over a cheque of US$2,500 to the local Medical Association from funds raised through a Crowd Funding and Webathon campaign on Wednesday, July 12, 2017.

The Crowd Funding Campaign was started a year ago by the SVG Medical Association, which saw the involvement of another breast cancer survivor – Bernadette Ambrose- Black.

Since the expansion of the campaign to the USA, Karla, who is of Vincentian parentage, undertook the programme as administrator; to this end she spearheaded a webathon in June, through which the monies were raised.

Karla who is also the author of the book, ‘Dig in your Heels,’ has authorized that all proceeds from the sale of her book be donated to the Medical Association to help in their efforts to assist persons with breast cancer.

President of the Association Dr Rosalind Ambrose said ‘the monies will be used to assist the Medical Association in acquiring cancer treatment.’ She thanked Karla for her generous contribution to the Association, noting that that the organization is extremely grateful to her for her ongoing support.

In her brief remarks, Karla opined that she was motivated to assist the Medical Association when she learnt of the plight of persons having to seek cancer related treatment abroad. She noted that if caught early, cancer could be treated and this was her way of ensuring that persons get a chance to survive.

She envisages that a cancer centre will be opened in SVG to improve on cancer care to patients.
