GHS makes it four in a row at Junior Panorama

The St Vincent Girls’ High School (GHS) continued their winning ways last Sunday, when they took the schools’ Junior Panorama title for the fourth consecutive year.

The team, captained by Shontelle Nanton-Lewis, bested three other schools with a spirited and very well received rendition, “Move It” by Johnny Rebel, scoring 239 points to walk away the title at the event, which was held at the Victoria Park.

Arranger Johnny Pompey told SEARCHLIGHT that this year’s victory feels even better than the previous three years. He said that he goes into every competition thinking they are not defending a championship, but instead looking to win one.

“So, once you are going out to win, you have to go all out to win. If you going to defend, you will just do music a certain way just to try and defend and back off people. But no, we not trying to defend, we trying to… topple over everybody, raise the bar and win the competition,” he stated.

Pompey noted that it felt good to be contributing to the wins for GHS.

“I must feel good that I can contribute…being that this year Mrs [Andrea] Bowman is retiring as [headmistress] we have to give her a good send off,” the elated band leader said, adding that he has a goal of winning seven straight championships.

“I am still keeping hope for seven straight.”

The Bethel High School, with a score of 196 points, placed second with their arrangement of Alston “Becket” Cyrus’s “40 years”, while the Marriaqua Primary School, with 189 points, took the third position with their arrangment of “Never Forget” by Sharnelle “Skarpyon” Williams. The Sandy Bay Secondary School, with 167 points, had to settle for fourth place with St Clare Lewis’s “Soca Highway.”(CM)
