Ninth anniversary of Biabou Senior Citizens Fitness Group

This month marks nine years since the establishment of the Biabou Senior Citizens Fitness Group. On September 15, 2007 CARICOM leaders signed a groundbreaking Port of Spain Declaration aimed at uniting to stop the epidemic of chronic non-communicable diseases.

Of the many commitments made by the Heads of Government, they pledged to promote policies and activities aimed at increasing physical activity in the entire population. Out of this declaration, the Biabou Senior Citizen Fitness Group was established on February 26, 2008. To celebrate the occasion, the group will host a week of activities from February 19 – 25.

The week will begin on Sunday with a church service at the Biabou Church of Christ. On Monday, members of the group will visit the shut-in members. Tuesday there will be a community discussion on Alzeheimers at the Biabou Learning Resource Centre, facilitated by Dr Amrie Morris Patterson. On Wednesday, members will be pampered by Ms La Toya Norville, who will treat the senior citizens to special manicures and pedicures. The activities will climax with a special luncheon on Thursday, February 23. The group, which is over 50 members strong, is coordinated by the Health Promotion Unit in the Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment.
