Fifth ‘Steel Expression’ December 30

The fifth instalment of Rodney Small’s Steel Expression will take place at the Arnos Vale Playing Field on Friday, December 30.

The concert, which was first held in 2012 at the Peace Memorial Hall in Richmond Hill, is designed to showcase young and upcoming talent, as well as seasoned performers.

This year, the event carries the theme “Starry Night” and according to the promoter and brain behind the show, Rodney Small of RS Promotions, {{more}}“the concert will feature a fusion of performances, using various genres and will ensure patrons’ satisfaction”.

This year, performances will come from, among others, veteran performers Rondy “Luta” McIntosh, Shaunelle McKenzie and Aretha Shallow and up-and-coming entertainers Geran Maule and Jordan Hamlet, among others. There will also be a surprise performer from St Lucia.

During the media launch of “Starry Night,” which was held at the Grenadine House at Kingstown Park on Tuesday, November 22, Small told the gathering that Steel Expressions was born while he was a student at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts in Jamaica.

He said that he thought up the event as a project for a final exam when he was asked to put together a simple 30-minute recital.

“The recital had great reviews and I was encouraged to take it on the road,” said Small.

He revealed that since he began hosting Steel Expressions in 2012, he has seen the show grow. He said that in the first year, 120 persons attended, while 750 persons attended in 2013 and 900 in 2014. Some 1,100 persons attended last year.

Some of the proceeds from the show will go towards the Youth Alive Programme and the School for Children with Special Needs.
