The National Emergency Council of NEMO will meet today, Tuesday, September 27, at 9 a.m. to discuss matters relating to the area of low pressure located over the mid-Atlantic that is likely to bring heavy rains and strong gusty winds across the island during its passage.

This meeting will be chaired by Montgomery Daniel, the acting Prime Minister.{{more}}

According to the latest update from the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) Meteorological Office, the area of low pressure located over the mid-Atlantic is now centered near 9°N 46°W or about 950 miles to the east south east of the Windward Islands.

The system is presently moving westward to west-northwestward at 15 to 20 mph and on its present track is expected to be in the vicinity of SVG by late Tuesday or Wednesday.

The initial effect should start Tuesday night into Wednesday with increasing cloudiness and heavy showers. Model analysis indicates that there is a very strong possibility that this system could become a Tropical Depression by the middle of the week.

Regardless of development, this system is likely to bring heavy rains and strong gusty winds across the island during its passage. The projected impacts are:

• Heavy rainfall and thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds. Wind may occasionally approach tropical storm strength.

• Flooding and landslides

• Significant wave heights of 6 – 6.5 m can be expected over Windward Islands. Coastal flooding can be expected. Marine operators should exercise caution

• The recent wet conditions experienced by islands in the Eastern Caribbean may exacerbate flooding due to antecedent soil conditions

The National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO), through the Meteorological Office will continue to monitor this tropical disturbance in the Atlantic.

All residents are advised to be on the alert, and continue to make preparations as this disturbance approaches land.

Residents of St Vincent and the Grenadines have been urged by the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) to be alert as the Meteorological Office continues to monitor a tropical disturbance in the Atlantic.

The Meteorological Office says: “This disturbance is expected to move quickly westward (20 to 25 mph) across the tropical Atlantic in the direction of the Eastern Caribbean States by this evening into Wednesday.

Environmental conditions are expected to become more conducive for development; models suggest the disturbance can approach our area as a Tropical Depression or Tropical Storm.

Local advisories may become necessary by late Sunday, as the system is expected in our area by Tuesday evening into Wednesday.

The local Meteorological Office will continue monitoring this possible development and issue details of expected wind speeds and rainfall amounts.”
